When chatting with most people about Egypt, the majestic pyramids in Gaza become the main focus and most recognized attraction. Meanwhile a journey South down the renowned Nile, lies the splendid, mesmerizing city of Luxor, the real rockstar. It was the capital of Egypt from the 12th dynasty on (1991 BC) and reached it’s zenith during the New Kingdom. Luxor is often called the greatest open-air museum in the world, but this description doesn’t begin to color this extraordinary place. Nothing in the world can compare to the grandeur and scale of the monuments that have survived from this ancient city that the Greeks called Thebes (and Egyptians named Waset). The setting is breathtakingly beautiful with the Nile River running aside the modern city and the desert countryside. Therein lies the mysterious Luxor and Karnak temples on the east side, while on the west bank, the ancient tombs and temples hiding beneath the sandstone surface. There is so much to explore and take in, I recommend at the minimum, a week to even begin to feel satiated.
At the end of your glorious days, there is no sweeter place to relax and reflect than the very special Al Moudira Hotel. The gracious owner, Zeina, has taken such special care with every gorgeous detail. A true labor of love, Al Moudira is literally an Arabian paradise, where you will feel like royalty either lounging in your sumptous bedroom, lingering around the open spaces, or taking laps in the refreshing pool. In the evenings, feel yourself transported back in time to the early 1920’s, while having dinner in the beautiful, French/Moroccan inspired dining room. The candles are lit, the eclectic jazz music is playing, while the service is so hospitable and kind. If you are lucky, Zeina will make you a salad picked fresh from her garden and you will gaze at the desert night with stars in your eyes.
